Theresa HWANG

Deputy Director, Gender Integration, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Theresa Hwang leads a team that advances the foundation’s gender integration efforts, which elevate the strategic importance of gender equality across the foundation’s global programs. 

She is responsible for identifying strategic opportunities and providing staff support to program teams so they can develop gender-intentional strategies and investments for greater impact.

Before joining the foundation, Theresa spent over a decade designing, implementing, and evaluating gender equality programs at CARE, a global humanitarian organization that works in more than 90 countries. 

As senior director for gender justice, she was the global lead for gender equality programs, and formed strategic partnership with colleagues in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles to develop organizational policies and DEI training for global staff. 

She also led humanitarian response and recovery efforts in Sri Lanka for Doctors of the World USA. 

Theresa has an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and an MPA from Princeton University.
